Apprentices are our future
Last year, all the Emmi apprentices passed their final exams and a majority of them got permanent jobs at Emmi. The year before we even had a record number of new apprentices. This positive development is no coincidence. Rather, it fits in with both the Emmi Purpose and our sustainability goals, in which employee development is firmly anchored.
Apprentices are key to being able to implement our core value: «Together, we create the best dairy moments – today and for generations to come». They are our promise for the future. We also want to create an environment for our «youngsters» in which they feel welcome, valued and inspired, and are able to find opportunities to develop themselves.
My day at Emmi
6:30 am My working day starts early in the morning. When I arrive at the workshop, usually still a little sleepy, I check my e-mails.
7:00 am I ask my boss about assignments and get an overview of my outstanding tasks. Then I go to the workshop and set up my workspace. We place great value on order and cleanliness in the workshop.
8:00 am This is time for our daily «Shopfloor», which is what we call our team meeting. Our boss tells us which jobs are still left over from the night shift. In addition, tasks within the team are divided up and absences discussed. If someone is missing, we have to see who can do their work.
9:00 am In the mornings I am usually at the milling machine. Milling is one of my strengths and I really enjoy it. I am also often at the lathe in the morning, welding and drilling. We still do this work by hand.
11:00 am Lunchtime: I usually enjoy my lunch with a team or with the other students. We have fun together and there are always a lot of laughs.
12:30 pm After lunch, I often produce spare parts for production and logistics plants. These are then stored with us, so that we already have them at our disposal if needed and only need to install them in Production or Logistics. The added personal benefit is that this work helps me prepare myself for the practical examinations that we have to do as part of our apprenticeships. The four areas of these exams are milling, drilling, rigging and assembly technology.
2:30 pm From the third year of the apprenticeship, we are also allowed to carry out inspections of the systems in logistics or production. Often this means that I am directly installing the spare parts that I have manufactured myself. It makes me proud that I can do all the steps in the process myself, from manufacturing to assembly.
3:45 pm My workday is coming to an end, but there is still some cleaning up to do. Not exactly my favourite task, but it has to be done. Order is paramount in our workshop.
4:00 pm Done: now I’m off! Since I have flexitime at Emmi, I can also get off work sooner or later. I really appreciate the fact that my apprenticeship has this flexibility. What I also find cool is the warmth and helpfulness of the whole team. That’s what makes the training fun.
